Bandhavgarh is a place of great mythological and
legendary significance. The ancient Bandhavgarh Fort is of great importance as
it is believed to have been gifted by Lord Rama to his younger brother
Lakshmana. "Bandhav" in English means brother and "Garh"
means fort. Hence the name, Bandhavgarh. The ruins of Bandhavgarh date back to
ages ago and you will find several man-made caves with inscriptions and rock
paintings inside the tiger reserve.
Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve located in the eastern
Satpura hill range of Umaria and Katni districts is of vital importance
considering the diversity of flora and fauna that is found here. Bandhavgarh is
also well known as the land of tigers. This is the place to visit if you want
to spot the big cat. A safe haven for tigers, Bandhavgarh National Park has the
highest density of Royal Bengal Tigers in the world which increases your
sighting probabilities. The sight of the majestic tiger, up close and personal,
triggers a sense of awe in you, of the kinds you would have rarely experienced.
This area is unique from the point of biodiversity, as
it comprises of hills, valleys, rivers, marshes, and meadows that ultimately
result into diverse vegetation. Apart from the tiger, Bandhavgarh is home to as
many as 34 species of mammals and nearly 260 species of birds and 70 species of
butterflies. Once the hunting ground of the Maharaja of Rewa, today Bandhavgarh
is a safe refuge for the majestic Royal Bengal Tigers.
